Release year 2019. 7,1 / 10 Star. 87minute. cast Matthew Macfadyen. Kitty Green. country USA. Home Round-ups (Image credit: Shutterstock) Looking for the best Google Assistant skills? We've rounded up the most useful (and entertaining) commands for controlling your smart home gadgets, navigating your schedule, getting recommendations and testing your trivia knowledge. The greatest thing about Google Assistant is that it's available on more than just the  Google Home, Google Nest Hub Max, Nest Mini  and Android phones. You can find it on a wide range of gadgets and on a number of the best smart speakers. Even iPhone users can download  an iOS version of Google Assistant.  For more Google Assistant-related tips, tricks, and how-tos, check out  our complete guide to Google Assistant. Find your phone (Image credit: Future) Already misplaced your new Pixel 4 XL? Whether it's fallen in the couch cushions or you can't remember which jacket you've left it in, you can use Google Assistant to find it. If you have a connected Google Home speaker, like the Nest Mini, you can ask it where your phone is and it will ring your phone. It works even when your phone is on silent or Do Not Disturb mode, meaning you'll be able to find it easily. Unlock your Pixel (Image credit: Google) You love that Google Assistant responds to your voice when your screen is off, but you hate it when your PIN and fingerprint methods appear on screen (requiring an extra step to unlock the device). Bypass these additional steps by using Google Assistant's voice command to unlock your device. Go into your Google Assistant settings, and select OK Google Detection followed by Trusted Voice. Open apps with your voice (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Let's say you're washing your hands, but you want to see your latest Gmail notifications. Just say, "OK, Google, open Gmail, " and watch Gmail open. You can use this command to open other apps, including third-party apps, as well. Screen your phone calls (Image credit: Google) Tired of getting bothered by telemarketers? If you pick up a Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL, you can have Google Assistant field those annoying and unwanted calls. The latest Pixels include a Call Screen feature where the Assistant will answer the phone on your behalf. Even better, an onscreen transcript of the call will appear so that you can see whether the call is coming from someone you can safely ignore. If it is a telemarketer, just mark the call as spam and move on. While the new Pixels get this feature first, Google says that it will come to earlier Pixels via a software update. Google image search (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Having a hard day at work? What's better than pictures of baby animals to lift your spirits? Ask your Google Assistant to do a Google image search of baby animals and you'll feel better in no time. Get advice on where to eat, drink, dance or shop (Image credit: Tom's Guide) It's Friday night, you're out with friends, but you're clueless as to where you should go for dinner or dancing. Google Assistant can help: By way of a Nearby feature, you can find out what places around cater to whatever you're in the mood for. Just ask Google Assistant to "show me nearby restaurants, " and finding that great new spot is just a tap away. Google Assistant gives you a list of restaurant names with the establishments' star ratings; tap on a listing to get the address, directions and a link for calling the restaurant. Get suggestions for vacation spots (Image credit: Tom's Guide) If you're looking to get away, Google Assistant can serve as a virtual travel planner. Just ask Google Assistant, "What are some great vacation ideas? " if you're open to anything. To be more specific, ask, for example, "What are the best places for vacation in November" to find seasonal travel hotspots. Google Assistant will pull up search results, which you can tap for more information. Cue up your favorite Netflix shows and movies (Image credit: Tom's Guide) If you want to kick back and enjoy a new movie or old TV show with family and friends, just ask Google Assistant to start streaming your show. You can even get specific: Say, "Play Stranger Things on Netflix, " and watch the Hawkins kids escape the Demogorgon at any time. The feature can be hit-and-miss, with older shows like MacGyver and Murder, She Wrote tripping up Google Assistant, though the "Play Luke Cage on Netflix" command works just fine. Test your expertise You name it, Google Assistant has a quiz on it. Gamers can say "Talk to Video Games Quiz, " while those interested in culture and history can try "Talk to Indian Culture Quiz. " Google can even quiz you on tech-company CEOs: Say "Talk to Company Quiz. " The Assistant will keep track of your score, and let you know how you did at the end. Get a news report (Image credit: Tom's Guide) It's one thing for Google Assistant to deliver your favorite news, but how about getting the assistant to read the news to you each morning? You only have to tap the software home button; when the pop-up box comes up with the Google Assistant question, "How May I help you? " say, "Good morning. " Google Assistant will say, "Good morning, Deidre" (your name here), and give you the weather in your city as well as read the latest news from your customized news sources. You can also say, "Good Afternoon" or "Good Evening, " and get your news read, since Google Assistant is aware of each time of day. Get a positive news report (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Tired of the unrelenting negativity of the news cycle? Your Google Assistant can provide some relief. Just say "Tell me something good, " and you'll get a summary of an uplifting news story with the option to find out more by tapping a link. Get more sports scores  (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Google Now was always good at delivering sports scores from games on the same day, but Google says the new Google Assistant is good at not just "now" — the old voice command — but also scores from yesterday and game times for tomorrow. Find out who won yesterday's big football game, just by tapping the home button and saying, "Who won yesterday's Broncos-Texans game? " Asking Google Assistant, "Who won the NFL game yesterday? " will bring up a list of NFL football scores from the day before. Get a weather forecast (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Ready to plan your weekend getaway to the park for a romantic picnic? You'll need to make sure the weather cooperates. Just grab your mobile meteorologist, Google Assistant, who can tell you if it'll be sunny with the temperature in the 70s or cold and rainy. Google Assistant is pretty flexible here. Asking, "What's the weather for the weekend? " will give you a forecast, while "What's it like outside? " triggers a rundown of current conditions. Send a voice message (Image credit: Tom's Guide) If you're out and about and need to contact your kids at home, Google Assistant can broadcast a voice message directly to your Google Home speakers at home, and your family can respond. Google Assistant also transcribes your message if your family member would rather read it.  Book movie tickets (Image credit: Google) Using Google Assistant, you can search for movies based on title, who's starring, and what's playing in the theaters near you. By selecting one of the showtimes, you can then book a ticket through Fandango. No more waiting in line! Play some tunes (Image credit: Tom's Guide) On a road trip and feel like breaking out into song? Keeping your hands on the wheel, you can tell Google Assistant to "play music, " and get the party started on the road. To strike up the band, simply say, "OK, Google, " followed by "play music" or "sing a song. " Look out for a disruption in playback if you have too many devices authorized on your Play Music service (you can have up to 10 devices max) or if you have yet to set Google Assistant to unlock your Pixel. Set important reminders (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Google Assistant's greatest power is that it can draw information from other Google apps and services — including Keep, Calendar and Gmail — to provide information at a moment's notice when you need it. If you fear you've missed any emails from yesterday, you can always ask Google Assistant, "Did I miss any emails from yesterday? " and the assistant will pull up emails that remain unopened. Need to be reminded of that bill you keep forgetting? Want to make sure you don't forget your wedding anniversary? Just set a reminder with Google Assistant, and you'll never forget that date again. To set the reminder, you can say, "OK, Google, set a reminder for my wedding anniversary, " and it's done, other than thanking Google Assistant for maintaining your wedded bliss. (By the way, Google Assistant will reply with "You're welcome" should you thank it). Jog your memory (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of the little things, like where you parked your car or even where you left your car keys or wallet. It’s pretty easy for Google Assistant, though, if you take advantage of the digital helper’s ability to set reminders. Just say “OK Google, remind me that my car keys are in the kitchen on the counter, ” and Google Assistant will recall it for you when you ask again. (Image credit: Tom's Guide) When in the grocery store, the last thing you want to do is fumble for your grocery list. If you've been using Google Keep, no worries: Google Assistant can grab your shopping list. You need only go into your Google Assistant settings, then select Shopping List beneath Pixel. The Assistant will enter into Google Keep and retrieve your list. Who knew hiring a professional shopper could be so fun, easy and free? For the holidays, you can also add gift ideas to a gift list. Say "Hey, Google, add a t-shirt for Joe to my gift list. " Find a loan (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Google Assistant can answer all of your questions about finding and paying back a loan with Leslie, its artificially intelligent loan expert. Say "Okay, Google, talk to Loan Finder, " to take advantage of her knowledge. You can ask Leslie your own questions, or ask for her answers to the most popular ones. After you answer a few questions, Leslie can redirect you to a listing of loan offers suited to you (via a partner website). For existing loans, Leslie can spit out the amount you'll be paying over the length of your loan term. Set alarms and wake up routines (Image credit: Tom's Guide) No need to fumble with the snooze button on that alarm clock in the morning when you can trust Google Assistant to wake you up on time. You need only tell Google Assistant, "Wake me up at 8 a. m., " to set an alarm. If you're bored with the regular alarms, you can even say "Wake me up at 8 a. m. to Pink, " and it will play selected songs from her. You can pick any song, artist, or playlist, and Google Assistant will draw from the default music service you specified. Using Google Routines, you can also set an alarm to trigger other actions. For example, Google can read you the news, or turn on your lights after you've dismissed your alarm.  Plan a route (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Some people want to plan their travel down to the smallest detail, including learning the fastest route to their destinations. If you're looking for the fastest way from Point A to Point B or you just need to get home from a place you've visited for the first time, ask Google Assistant to tell you. The trip from Florida to New York isn't as long as you'd think. Google Assistant works with both Google Maps and Waze.  New York City residents can also use Google Assistant to check public-transit schedules, using either an Android phone or a smart speaker. Ask "Hey, Google, when is the next F train? ". You'll get your train's ETA and walking directions to the nearest station. Send a text message (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Need to send a text message telling a friend or loved one you'll be late to dinner? No problem. Just say, "OK, Google, " followed by, "Send a text message to (the person's name). " From there, you can dictate the exact message you want delivered. Google Assistant will then ask you whether you want to edit the message or send it. Set a kitchen timer (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Google has partnered with United Airlines to help travelers check into flights with Google Assistant. Once you've got the flight stored in your calendar, say "Google, check into my flight. " You won't even need a confirmation number. You can also use Google to book hotel rooms through services such as Choice Hotels, Priceline and Travelclick. You're cooking at home for the first time in months, and you're enjoying a simple evening with your spouse. Make sure to set your baked chicken on a timer by saying, "OK, Google, set a timer for baked chicken for 2. 5 hours. " You can use the timer for other things, too, but dinner preparations are a natural for this Google Assistant feature. See if things add up (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Instead of scrolling through the listings grid, you can ask Google Assistant when specific shows are playing, and on what channel. For example, you can ask "When is Law & Order on next, " or "what channel is showing Hell's Kitchen? " Not everyone can do math in their head, and there’s really no need to with Google Assistant close at hand. Just say “OK Google, tell me what is 15 x 24, ” and it’ll respond with the answer quickly. Now, you never have to fumble for the  calculator app on your smartphone  or piece of scratch paper ever again. Get a motivational quote (Image credit: Tom's Guide) When you're buried in work, it can be difficult to see the forest for the trees. But your Google Assistant can help you take a step back with famous motivational quotes. Just ask. Google can also deliver quotes on any topic of your choosing. Try asking for a music quote or a space quote. Translate Between Languages (Image credit: Tom's Guide) When you're having trouble entertaining yourself, turn to Google Assistant for a little diversion. Just hit that software home button and tell Google Assistant, "I'm bored. " The assistant can tell corny jokes (such as a bunny's favorite kind of music: "hip hop") and play games such as solitaire or tic-tac-toe, but it can also surprise you with some random fun, such as funny or trending videos. Do you want to know a music artist's top No. 1 hits or the latest single from any given artist? Google Assistant can give you answers. You need only say, for example, "What are (artist name's) No. 1 hits? " to find the answer. Google Assistant can also do mathematical computations and field questions about weights and measurement, including converting currencies. You can change Google Assistant's language and dialect, but the mobile assistant can also make you a linguist. If you've set Google Assistant to unlock your phone, just say, "How do you say 'dinner' in Spanish? " (Simply replace "dinner" with whatever word or phrase you want translated and "Spanish" with your language of choice — Google Assistant can translate 188 languages. ) The assistant will speak the translated phrase for you. If you need to hear the phrase again, just say, "OK, Google, repeat that, " and Google Assistant will do as you command. You can also use Google's "Interpreter Mode" on any Google Home speaker or smart display. Say "Hey, Google, by my French interpreter" to start up a bilingual conversation. Google will translate what you're saying into French in real time, and can translate your partner's response back into English as well.  Interpreter mode (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Google Assistant can be your interpreter between 44 different languages. Just say, "Hey Google, be my {insert language} interpreter, " to have Google Assistant show and speak both sides of multi-language conversation. Use your camera to identify your surroundings (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Google Lens allows you you to point your phone's camera at an object and have it instantly recognized, complete with contextual responses. Snap a photo of a concert marquee, and Google Assistant will be able to parse out the name of the band and offer links to play their songs or buy tickets to the show. After debuting on the Pixel phones, Google has since rolled out Lens to other devices. Assign a new language or dialect (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Practicing a new language or dialect for a business trip? You can change Google Assistant to help with your language skills. Tap the white software home button at the bottom of the display until you see Google Assistant appear. Next, tap the three gray dots at the top right of the pop-up box, then Settings, then "Adjust settings for this Pixel device. " From there, tap Assistant Language, go to Language Preferences and select Add a Language. From there, you'll be prompted to select a language and dialect (Français and Canada, for example) that you want for Google Assistant. You can also give Google an Australian or British accent by selecting "Assistant Voice" under Google Assistant Settings. Tell a story While you're running around getting your kids ready for bed, Google can read them a story. Say "Hey, Google, tell me a story, " or "Hey, Google, tell me a bedtime story. " Stories feature a number of popular characters, including the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. On Google Home speakers in the U. S., Google can also play music and sound effects while you read certain children's books.  Have a laugh (Image credit: Google) If you need some humor in your life, Google can help. Say "Hey, Google, tell me a joke" for a cute joke. You'll get a wide variety of quips, from knock-knock jokes to question-answers and slick one-liners. Jokes come in many different languages, and are tailored to your region.  Assign reminders (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Google Assistant  gained a neat new family organization feature just in time for  back to school  season. While you could already send yourself reminders, you can now have Google Assistant be the family nag, reminding your partner, kids or roommates to do things like pick up the dry cleaning, preheat the  oven, and take out the trash.  Assignable reminders are available for  phones,  Google Assistant-enabled speakers, and  smart displays. The feature will work with  Google Nest Hub Max  when it’s available in September. Record stories with My Stories (Image credit: Tom's Guide) The My Storytime skill lets you record stories for playback when you’re away from your family. When you upload audio files to, any Google Nest speakers and displays on your account can play them aloud. Just say “Hey Google, talk to My Storytime, " to listen.

The Assistant. Is it just me? or does anyone here also thought about a dog's purpose movie. As a recovering addict who used to play team sports myself, this film trailer gives me feels. Hope it lives up to my expectations. Great movie, thanks. Saved me 90 minutes of my life. It took two years for a truly great movie about the Harvey Weinstein case to come out, and The Assistant is it. (The lag time is no big surprise, since Weinstein’s close association with most of Hollywood left much of the movie industry reeling and uncertain about individual complicity in giving the alleged predator cover for decades. ) Instead of addressing the sexual assault allegations head-on, Australian director Kitty Green turned to fiction to explore what made Weinstein such a powerful, feared figure in Hollywood. Green is best known not for fiction features but for her documentaries, which explore the way bigger systems impact the lives of ordinary people. In her most recent film, 2017’s Casting JonBenét, Green looked at how the media, and cycles of violence and abuse, affect the way people think about the notorious 1996 murder of 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey. The Assistant covers some similar ground, albeit in a very different way. The Americans ’ Julia Garner plays Jane, a new assistant in the Tribeca offices of a high-powered movie studio executive. The Assistant follows Jane through one long workday, which begins before dawn and ends late at night. Jane makes coffee and copies, takes calls and endures light ribbing from her colleagues. She also witnesses, to her slowly growing horror, what she thinks might be her powerful boss’s inappropriate behavior toward a young woman who shows up unexpectedly, saying she’s been promised a job in the office. The genius of The Assistant (clearly modeled on Chantal Akerman’s 1975 feminist masterpiece Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels) is that we don’t see the “Weinstein” character directly. Instead, we hear his voice and see his back from a distance; we also see the fear he provokes in his subordinates. He isn’t the point of the story, though. The point, as The Assistant makes blindingly clear, is that the movie executive gets away with his behavior because of the complicity of the people around him. They joke about and roll their eyes at him and make excuses for him, rather than speaking up or stepping in. I caught up with Green at the Sundance Film Festival, where The Assistant was playing after a strong premiere at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival last August. We talked about the movie’s attention to detail, the reasons she chose to obscure the “Weinstein” figure, and the way economics affect the systems that protect predators. Alissa Wilkinson I keep hearing from people who have worked as assistants, especially in Hollywood, that this movie is eerily accurate. Kitty Green Yeah, but it’s strange. Someone came up to me at Telluride and said, “How did you get the Froot Loops right? We had Froot Loops in the Weinstein Company. That was all we ate. ” I just picked Froot Loops because they’re colorful! Someone brought bran, and I think the props person was like, “No, no, no, let’s get Froot Loops. ” So a lot of these things are accidental. But it’s weird how a detail like that can really have an emotional effect on somebody. Being in an abusive environment, those details stay with you. I did a lot of research, but not to the level that people assume I did. I did interview maybe a hundred people. I started with a friend of mine who had been with the Weinstein Company, and a few former Weinstein Company employees. Then I went to Miramax. Then I did studios and agencies and other production companies. I can’t really name the other ones because their boss is still their boss. From there, I went to assistants in other sectors. The same stories came up again and again, patterns that cross the globe. Patterns like what? Both film and other fields have very gendered systems, where you see your male colleagues promoted before you. You see them getting opportunities that you’re not getting. There’s a gendered division of labor, so they are given tasks that you’re not given. There were lots of stories of going to HR and feeling completely unsupported, or stripped of any kind of self-worth upon leaving, because HR exists to protect the company and not the employees. Those are the kind of stories that I was getting again and again. We were focused on how the larger systems sideline women in particular. That hierarchy is noticeable in the film. And it also plays into one thing I thought about a lot, which is that The Assistant shows how people are sort of trained to not notice when bad things happen, because it’s part of their job to look away and just do what they’re told. I was reminded of stories I hear about governments committing atrocities and “ordinary” people who become complicit in them, even if they argue that they’re “just” doing their jobs. You don’t focus on the “Weinstein” character so much as people who work at the company — junior executives, receptionists, human resources people, just regular workers in that environment. How did you start writing them into the story? Well, here’s the thing. In the original draft, I gave the men too hard of a time. I sent the original draft around to people for feedback, and a lot of people said, “Listen, women are guilty of this kind of behavior as well. ” The film is from Julia’s point of view completely, so you don’t really know what anyone else’s day was like, what they’ve been through, how much they know about what’s going on. [... ] You’re only given as much information as Julia has, which is not a lot. All you can see is that everyone kind of knows something sinister is going on, but they don’t come right out and say it. Some people assume their boss is sleeping with a lot of women or having extramarital affairs. But you don’t know how much they really know, especially consent and what’s going on back there in his office. Although we definitely can see how his temper rules the office. Yeah, it’s definitely an abusive work environment. Matthew Macfadyen in The Assistant by Kitty Green, an official selection of the Spotlight program at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Sundance Institute I’ve been reading about how Hollywood’s assistants are making a move toward unionizing for more fair pay and humane work hours. Even if your boss isn’t outright abusive, the job kind of just wears you down until you do whatever is asked of you without questioning. Yeah, completely. The complaint is that the wages in Hollywood are so low that you can only work there if you have another source of income, where you come from a rich family, which completely prevents a whole section of society from getting into the film industry and getting those jobs. They’re trying to change the way people are brought into the industry. Right. There’s an economics at play in who gets put into those jobs and can afford to stay in them. The economic factors definitely show up in The Assistant in various subtle ways. If it was just Harvey Weinstein that was the problem, well, then, it would be fixed. We’d all be fine. But it’s not. The system is rotten. But “system” is a word that sounds so broad and vague, and what I wanted to do was highlight these concrete examples of what that system is — everything from who gets paid what and mysterious checks that get sent through to HR, to different layers of machinery that support specifically white men being in power. Which is interesting, because about 10 minutes in I realized that The Assistant bore some strong resemblance to one of the greatest films about women, power, and economics — Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman [ 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles], from 1975. It’s one of my favorites, too. In both movies, our protagonist is doing all of these simple, almost rote tasks to get through her day, and then there are moments of intense emotional stress. When I started working on this project, I’d say it was about assistants, and people would say, “Oh, the enablers. I know who these people are. ” I thought, I don’t think you fully understand. People don’t really understand who these people are, or the work their jobs consist of. I really wanted the film to be clear about how [Jane] spends her time at work. It’s not like we only show her having all these crazy, dark experiences. A lot of her work is very mundane and routine. So I wanted to focus on routine. Jeanne Dielman really influenced my filmmaking career. I saw it when I was very young, and I was like, “Wow, filmmaking can be this? ” It blew my mind. It’s a feminist classic, and it’s very much about how gender and economics are intertwined within a particular system. Completely. I wanted to echo that. Kitty Green and Julia Garner before a Sundance screening of The Assistant. Ilya S. Savenok/Getty Images How did you decide not to actually show Weinstein? The character is actually just “The Boss” in the movie. But he looks and sounds unmistakably like Harvey Weinstein, even though we only hear his voice kind of muffled and see him out of focus, from the back. Yeah, but interestingly, that’s just because a particular actor happened to be free. Here’s something strange, actually — the voice and body are different people. In the script, you weren’t really supposed to hear the boss’s voice at all. But I filmed all of these close-ups of Julia on the phone. I was going to use wider shots, but when I saw Julia’s eyes, I wanted us to be right there with her. Then it was weird if a voice wasn’t coming out of the phone — you needed to hear something So we ended up casting a voice actor to play that voice in post-production. We went to Avy Kaufman, who’s an amazing casting agent, and she was just like, “I know who you need. ” The actor came in and was like, “Oh, I know who this guy is. Let me do it my way. ” I was like, “Sure! ” It was so scary and terrifying listening in the booth. I was shivering. At the end he came up to give me a hug, and I was like, “No! ” He’s a lovely guy! I was just so terrified by what I’d heard. Yes, and I think everyone’s worked in a job where just the voice of your boss on the other end of the line sparks huge anxiety. Everyone’s had a boss they didn’t know how to please. And colleagues that you’re trying to impress too, especially when you’re new. It’s interesting how much the movie is affecting people. I’ve made movies before, and I’ve been to festivals with movies before. But I’ve never made a movie where people grab my arm and are like, “Oh, my God. Let me tell you …” That’s been incredible. Or, people don’t even want to talk. They just want to stand near me. That’s happened a few times, where women just came and stood by quietly. It meant a lot to me. They feel like someone saw them. Right. Centering on the person with the least power in the narrative was really important — someone you almost ignored. I try to treat everyone well, to be kind, but sometimes I walk into these offices and just ignore whoever’s working at the desk, answering the phones. Hopefully we can shake that off a little bit. It’s funny, I had a filmmaker friend who took three weeks to respond when I sent a cut to them, and I knew they’d watched it. They normally write me right away and will be very critical and unfiltered. But it was three weeks later. Finally, I got this response. They said, “I’m sorry, I felt really guilty, because I have all these assistants who I ask to do too much for me, so I’m still processing my role in this. ” That’s incredible, the idea that someone will treat someone differently after seeing the movie. Usually you’ve made documentaries. Did anything carry over from your documentary work into this fiction film? I feel like I read a lot about this subject before making the movie, [... ] for instance, having to clean up your boss’s couch after he has a “visitor. ” But the actual lived experience, provoking the feeling of emotionally identifying with somebody in that position, really seeing what her day is like, the highs and lows, being stuck in her shoes for 90 minutes — that was something I could achieve. I’m very meticulous about research, so there’s a connection with my documentary work there. And I’ve watched a lot of observational documentaries, and there’s an observational component here. But all my films are about women and the media, to be honest, and I feel like this one sits squarely within that as well. And I’m trying to explore an issue in a way that the media aren’t really covering it. Trying to show it in a different light. The Assistant played at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and opens in theaters on January 31.

So he goes to a remote island to learn a whistling language that will allow him to communicate with the criminals from a distance. There he rekindles a relationship with his old flame and his priorities change. As both the criminals and his colleagues are onto Cristi what choices will he make to come out clean of his predicament? A clever game of cops and robbers ensues.
Summing up this multi layered, not always coherent plot, is not an easy task. THE WHISTLERS takes a long time to get going but it's many elements come together building up to something special. Heavy on movie references it is heavily inspired by Tarantino movies, although the style of the cinematography is rather dull.
The script on paper must look great, but this is the case where a writer should let go of his work and let someone else direct. Cornelliu Porumboiu helmed 13 films but seems to be still searching for his directing style. While all the cast do their job well, the motives of their characters for the majority of the film are obscure to say the least.
But if this is the originality you are looking for THE WHISTLERS is for you. With good timing and a genuine sense of wit it is a rewarding experience for those who will stick with it until the end.

LaKeith Stanfield, Issa Rae. Stella Meghie. . Review=A series of intertwining love stories set in the past and in the present. Release Date=2020.

During one summer in the 1950s, a group of friends found an old abandoned house in the woods. They entered to see what they could find. Inside the house, a water hole was dug in the center of the room. Three of the boys decided to swim, while the other stayed dry and took pictures of the house with his camera. Thirty some years later, in 1982, a man was hiking and found an old camera. He took it to the local police station to try and find out who it belonged to. The police got the film developed. Most of the photos had been destroyed, save for a few. This picture is the last picture that was taken. It is unknown what happened to the boys’ faces or why the series of pictures abruptly ended. The kids have never been identified and their bodies were never found. What is happening in this image still remains a mystery.

Home / Photography 18 Famous First Photographs in History: From the Oldest Photo Ever to the World’s First Instagram This still life, shot in 1837, is the world’s earliest reliably dated daguerreotype. While the term photography was coined in the early 19th-century, Greek mathematicians had been making pinhole cameras since the 4th century BCE. The history of photography has always been filled with innovation, as imagery has continued to develop along with the technology photographers have on hand. With such a long history, it’s no surprise that photography is full of important firsts, from the world’s oldest photograph to the first photo uploaded to Instagram. Most early photos used the daguerreotype process invented by Louis Daguerre, but technical inventions have created endless possibilities for photographers. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane to learn about some of the famous first photographs that have changed how we view the world. First Photograph Ever The world’s first photograph —or at least the oldest surviving photo—was taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 or 1827. Captured using a technique known as heliography, the shot was taken from an upstairs window at Niépce’s estate in Burgundy. As heliography produces one-of-a-kind images, there are no duplicates of the piece, which is now part of the permanent collection at the University of Texas-Austin. World’s First Self-Portrait We may be used to selfies now, but it’s Robert Cornelius’s 1839 image that lays claim to the first self-portrait. Taken in Philadelphia, Cornelius sat for a little over one minute before covering the lens. Oldest Photo of New York This 1848 daguerreotype of Manhattan’s Upper West side is the oldest surviving photo of New York. In 2009, it was sold at Sotheby’s for $62, 500. Unfortunately, the first photo of New York, which shows the Unitarian Church, is now lost. First Photograph of the Moon This daguerreotype by John W. Draper from 1840 is the first photo of the moon. Taken from his rooftop observatory at New York University, the image has since sustained extensive damage. First Photo with People Louis Daguerre—the inventor of daguerreotype—shot what is not only the world’s oldest photograph of Paris, but also the first photo with humans. The 10-minute long exposure was taken in 1839 in Place de la République and it’s just possible to make out two blurry figures in the left-hand corner. First Photo of War Carol Popp de Szathmari is the first known war photographer, capturing hundreds of images of the Crimean War. But it’s this image from 1870 that is thought to be the first photograph of an actual battle. Showing a line of Prussian troops as they advance, the photographer shot the image as he stood with French defenders. First Photo of a President John Quincy Adams holds the distinction of being the first U. S. president photographed, though he wasn’t in office at the time. Captured at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1843, fourteen years after he left office, the daguerreotype was shot by Philip Haas. The first photograph of a sitting president was taken in 1841, but has now been lost. It depicted short-lived president William Henry Harrison before he passed away from pneumonia just 31 days after taking office. Oldest Photograph of the Sun Just five years after the first photo of the moon, in 1845, French physicists Louis Fizeau and Leon Foucault took the first photograph of the sun. Even with just a 1/60th exposure, it’s possible to see sunspots. First Photo of a Tornado It only seems fitting that the first known photograph of a tornado was taken in Kansas. On April 26, 1884, a tornado moved slowly across Anderson county, which allowed amateur photographer A. A. Adams to set up his box camera. A pioneering image in meteorology, Adams’ image is a pre-cursor to the storm chasers we still see today. Oldest Aerial Photo In the age of drones, aerial photography is often taken for granted, but this 1860 image actually pioneered the technique. Showing Boston from over 2, 000 feet in the air, this aerial photograph was taken by  James Wallace Black and Samuel Archer King. Unfortunately, the first aerial image, which was taken by French photographer and balloonist Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, has been lost. First Photograph of Earth from the Moon On August 23, 1966, a lunar orbiter snapped this image of Earth from the Moon. The incredible image was captured during the orbiter’s 16th lap around the Moon. Oldest Color Photograph Physicist James Clerk Maxwell is responsible for taking the world’s first color photograph. In 1855, Maxwell developed a three-color method, with the actual shutter being pressed by Thomas Sutton in 1861. The subject of the image? A colored ribbon, also known as a tartan ribbon. First Color Underwater Photo In 1926  National Geographic  photographer Charles Martin and botanist William Longley took the first underwater photograph in color. Taken off the Florida Keys, it shows a hogfish. The duo took this pioneering shot by encasing cameras in waterproof housing and using a magnesium-powered flash. First Digital Photo The first digital photo was taken earlier than you may have thought. Almost 20 years before the original Kodak digital camera, in 1957, this square image of Russell Kirsch’s son was taken. The photo is a digital scan of a film image, resulting in a square photograph that makes it Instagram ready. First Digital Photo of a President It was only in 2009 that a digital camera was used to photograph POTUS. Official photographer Pete Souza holds the honor with his portrait of Barack Obama. Taken with a Canon 5D Mark II and no flash, the image shows the shifting gears of technology that have reached the White House. First Photo on Instagram On July 16, 2010, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom uploaded the first post on Instagram. Actually, it was uploaded using an app called Codename, which three months later became the app we all know and love. It’s only fitting—given how many pets have become famous from the app—that the first photo on Instagram shows Systrom’s cute pup sitting at a taco stand in Mexico. First Photo Inside the Sun’s Corona Photo: NASA/Naval Research Laboratory/Parker Solar Probe On November 8, 2018, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe took a groundbreaking photograph at 16. 9 million miles from the Sun. That’s incredibly close when one considers that Earth is located 91 million miles from the Sun. This first-ever photo from inside the Sun’s corona is a breakthrough in the field of heliophysics and researchers are hopeful it will help us learn more about this giant star. First Photo of a Black Hole Photo: Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration In April 2019, NASA released the first known image of a black hole. This mysterious entity sits in the center of the Messier 87 galaxy—55 million light years from Earth—and was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope. The luminous disk we see is actually the black hole’s accretion disk, where hot gases swirl around the vacuous space. All images via Wikipedia except where noted. It is an ink on paper print and reproduces a 17th-century Flemish engraving showing a man leading a horse. A photograph (also known as a photo) is an image created by light falling on a photosensitive surface, usually photographic film or an electronic image sensor, such as a CCD or a CMOS chip. Most photographs are created using a camera, which uses a lens to focus the scene's visible wavelengths of light into a reproduction of what the human eye would see. The process and practice of creating such images is called photography. The word photograph was coined in 1839 by Sir John Herschel and is based on the Greek φῶς ( phos), meaning "light, " and γραφή ( graphê), meaning "drawing, writing, " together meaning "drawing with light. " [1] History [ edit] The first permanent photograph, a contact-exposed copy of an engraving, was made in 1822 using the bitumen -based " heliography " process developed by Nicéphore Niépce. The first photographs of a real-world scene, made using a camera obscura, followed a few years later, but Niépce's process was not sensitive enough to be practical for that application: a camera exposure lasting for hours or days was required. [2] In 1829 Niépce entered into a partnership with Louis Daguerre and the two collaborated to work out a similar but more sensitive and otherwise improved process. After Niépce's death in 1833 Daguerre concentrated on silver halide -based alternatives. He exposed a silver-plated copper sheet to iodine vapor, creating a layer of light-sensitive silver iodide; exposed it in the camera for a few minutes; developed the resulting invisible latent image to visibility with mercury fumes; then bathed the plate in a hot salt solution to remove the remaining silver iodide, making the results light-fast. He named this first practical process for making photographs with a camera the daguerreotype, after himself. Its existence was announced to the world on 7 January 1839 but working details were not made public until 19 August. Other inventors soon made improvements which reduced the required exposure time from a few minutes to a few seconds, making portrait photography truly practical and widely popular. The daguerreotype had shortcomings, notably the fragility of the mirror-like image surface and the particular viewing conditions required to see the image properly. Each was a unique opaque positive that could only be duplicated by copying it with a camera. Inventors set about working out improved processes that would be more practical. By the end of the 1850s the daguerreotype had been replaced by the less expensive and more easily viewed ambrotype and tintype, which made use of the recently introduced collodion process. Glass plate collodion negatives used to make prints on albumen paper soon became the preferred photographic method and held that position for many years, even after the introduction of the more convenient gelatin process in 1871. Refinements of the gelatin process have remained the primary black-and-white photographic process to this day, differing primarily in the sensitivity of the emulsion and the support material used, which was originally glass, then a variety of flexible plastic films, along with various types of paper for the final prints. Color photography is almost as old as black-and-white, with early experiments including John Herschel 's Anthotype prints in 1842, the pioneering work of Louis Ducos du Hauron in the 1860s, and the Lippmann process unveiled in 1891, but for many years color photography remained little more than a laboratory curiosity. It first became a widespread commercial reality with the introduction of Autochrome plates in 1907, but the plates were very expensive and not suitable for casual snapshot-taking with hand-held cameras. The mid-1930s saw the introduction of Kodachrome and Agfacolor Neu, the first easy-to-use color films of the modern multi-layer chromogenic type. These early processes produced transparencies for use in slide projectors and viewing devices, but color prints became increasingly popular after the introduction of chromogenic color print paper in the 1940s. The needs of the motion picture industry generated a number of special processes and systems, perhaps the best-known being the now-obsolete three-strip Technicolor process. Types of photographs [ edit] Non-digital photographs are produced with a two-step chemical process. In the two-step process the light-sensitive film captures a negative image (colors and lights/darks are inverted). To produce a positive image, the negative is most commonly transferred (' printed ') onto photographic paper. Printing the negative onto transparent film stock is used to manufacture motion picture films. Alternatively, the film is processed to invert the negative image, yielding positive transparencies. Such positive images are usually mounted in frames, called slides. Before recent advances in digital photography, transparencies were widely used by professionals because of their sharpness and accuracy of color rendition. Most photographs published in magazines were taken on color transparency film. Originally, all photographs were monochromatic or hand-painted in color. Although methods for developing color photos were available as early as 1861, they did not become widely available until the 1940s or 1950s, and even so, until the 1960s most photographs were taken in black and white. Since then, color photography has dominated popular photography, although black and white is still used, being easier to develop than color. Panoramic format images can be taken with cameras like the Hasselblad Xpan on standard film. Since the 1990s, panoramic photos have been available on the Advanced Photo System (APS) film. APS was developed by several of the major film manufacturers to provide a film with different formats and computerized options available, though APS panoramas were created using a mask in panorama-capable cameras, far less desirable than a true panoramic camera, which achieves its effect through a wider film format. APS has become less popular and has been discontinued. The advent of the microcomputer and digital photography has led to the rise of digital prints. These prints are created from stored graphic formats such as JPEG, TIFF, and RAW. The types of printers used include inkjet printers, dye-sublimation printer, laser printers, and thermal printers. Inkjet prints are sometimes given the coined name " Giclée ". The Web has been a popular medium for storing and sharing photos ever since the first photograph was published on the web by Tim Berners-Lee in 1992 (an image of the CERN house band Les Horribles Cernettes). Today popular sites such as Flickr, PhotoBucket and 500px are used by millions of people to share their pictures. Preservation [ edit] Paper folders [ edit] Ideal photograph storage involves placing each photo in an individual folder constructed from buffered, or acid-free paper. [4] Buffered paper folders are especially recommended in cases when a photograph was previously mounted onto poor quality material or using an adhesive that will lead to even more acid creation. [5] Store photographs measuring 8x10 inches or smaller vertically along the longer edge of the photo in the buffered paper folder, within a larger archival box, and label each folder with relevant information to identify it. The rigid nature of the folder protects the photo from slumping or creasing, as long as the box is not packed too tightly or under filled. Folder larger photos or brittle photos stacked flat within archival boxes with other materials of comparable size. [6] Polyester enclosures [ edit] The most stable of plastics used in photo preservation, polyester, does not generate any harmful chemical elements, but nor does it have any capability to absorb acids generated by the photograph itself. Polyester sleeves and encapsulation have been praised for their ability to protect the photograph from humidity and environmental pollution, slowing the reaction between the item and the atmosphere. This is true, however the polyester just as frequently traps these elements next to the material it is intended to protect. This is especially risky in a storage environment that experiences drastic fluctuations in humidity or temperature, leading to ferrotyping, or sticking of the photograph to the plastic. [4] Photographs sleeved or encapsulated in polyester cannot be stored vertically in boxes because they will slide down next to each other within the box, bending and folding, nor can the archivist write directly onto the polyester to identify the photograph. Therefore, it is necessary to either stack polyester protected photographs horizontally within a box, or bind them in a three ring binder. Stacking the photos horizontally within a flat box will greatly reduce ease of access, and binders leave three sides of the photo exposed to the effects of light [7] and do not support the photograph evenly on both sides, leading to slumping and bending within the binder. The plastic used for enclosures has been manufactured to be as frictionless as possible to prevent scratching photos during insertion to the sleeves. Unfortunately, the slippery nature of the enclosure generates a build-up of static electricity, which attracts dust and lint particles. The static can attract the dust to the inside of the sleeve, as well, where it can scratch the photograph. [4] Likewise, these components that aid in insertion of the photo, referred to as slip agents, can break down and transfer from the plastic to the photograph, where they deposit as an oily film, attracting further lint and dust. At this time, there is no test to evaluate the long-term effects of these components on photographs. In addition, the plastic sleeves can develop kinks or creases in the surface, which will scratch away at the emulsion during handling. [7] Handling and care [ edit] It is best to leave photographs lying flat on the table when viewing them. Do not pick it up from a corner, or even from two sides and hold it at eye level. Every time the photograph bends, even a little, this can break down the emulsion. [8] The very nature of enclosing a photograph in plastic encourages users to pick it up; users tend to handle plastic enclosed photographs less gently than non-enclosed photographs, simply because they feel the plastic enclosure makes the photo impervious to all mishandling. As long as a photo is in its folder, there is no need to touch it; simply remove the folder from the box, lay it flat on the table, and open the folder. If for some reason the researcher or archivist does need to handle the actual photo, perhaps to examine the verso for writing, he or she can use gloves if there appears to be a risk from oils or dirt on the hands. Myths and beliefs [ edit] Because daguerreotypes were rendered on a mirrored surface, many spiritualists also became practitioners of the new art form. Spiritualists would claim that the human image on the mirrored surface was akin to looking into one's soul. The spiritualists also believed that it would open their souls and let demons in. Among Muslims, it is makruh (disliked) to perform salah (worship) in a place decorated with photographs. [9] Photography and darkroom anomalies and artifacts sometimes lead viewers to believe that spirits or demons have been captured in photos. [10] Legality [ edit] The production or distribution of certain types of photograph has been forbidden under modern laws, such as those of government buildings, [11] highly classified regions, [12] private property, copyrighted works, [13] [14] children's genitalia, [15] child pornography and less commonly pornography overall. [16] These laws vary greatly between jurisdictions. Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Pandey done their best performance in this movie. In the story, there was a slight decrease in the dialogues. I had the good overall experience to watch this film.

Weathering with you - das mädchen das die sonne berührte

(Context before this starts: I live in Australia and this movie was released in select theaters on the 22nd of August)
I have been a fan of Makoto Shinkai since I watched his movie 'Your Name' in 2017, it being my favourite movie of all time. A timeless movie about determination and love, an atypical romance where lovers are obstructed to be with each other through time and space. Emotional, riveting, dramatic, intense and incredibly entertaining throughout. And one of the greatest worries for this film was that it would be too similar to Your Name. that it would be boring and unappealing.
Weathering with You is not Your Name.
We open to rain, a recurring happening in this movie, in Tokyo. The camera moves backwards through a window and we see a girl staring out. We then see she is inside a room of a hospital with a patient on life support in bed. This immediately sets the tone for the entire film, and the difference between Your Name. and Weathering with You. This film shows the viewer straight away that this film is not a happy film like Your Name. Where Your Name. has tragedy and death, Shinkai focuses more on the relationship between Taki and Mitsuha. It shows how their love will bring them together with themes of determination, culture and strength of mind. Weathering with You is somewhat cynical towards life. It shows the gritty parts of Tokyo with police brutality, underage prostitution and homelessness. The film is dark and morbid for most of the run-time, but breaks up the intense scenes with comedy or more hopeful moments.
The direction from Shinkai is breathtaking and complements the art style beautifully. It works in symphony with the character and landscaping designs that you lose yourself in the film, starring in awe at what you see. I saw this film with my brother and no kidding there was a scene where our jaws dropped and we stared at each other before taking out our phones to screen shot it. The movie has multiple lingering shots on beautiful pieces which is just Shinkai saying "I know you wanna see this, so I'mma just let this shot stay there for a couple more seconds. which I don't object to. The film knows it's gorgeous and it even improves its art style from Shinkai's previous works. This comes from mainly one thing. The rain. This has to have the best rain I have ever seen. Each individual rain droplet is painstakingly drawn with low fog on very surface, and the audio design of the rain on walls and glass in a surround sound theatre was incredible. It was very realistic and made me shiver on multiple occasions.
This film, as I said, is different from Your Name. Aside from a recurring gag in that film, the movie is family friendly, little kids can watch and enjoy it as much as adults. Violence is only implied and no one is ever shown in pain. Language is tame and has one mild swear word, a few characters drink alcohol and one character smokes. There is around one intense/frightening scene with the meteor rush, and maybe you could count Taki's time trip as intense, but that's about it. Weathering With You is a contrasting film. This movie also has a recurring gag similar to Your Name. but it is called out and dealt with less seriously. This type of content is looked at more seriously, with women saying they have to sell their bodies to pay rent. This shows problems going on in current Tokyo where women are objectified by men and are used in terrible ways, especially for under-aged girls. There is infrequent but intense violence. Characters are beaten, shot at, slapped, tackled, one character sacrifices their life. Violence is not glorified, and the aftermath of shooting a gun has a character shocked and shaking in fear over what he had just done. A singular swear word relating to male cow defecation is said a few times by different characters and a light swear about someone without married parents said multiple times. A character is passed out with stubbed cigarettes next to him as he is riddled with guilt, and the same character is dealing with a nicotine addiction that he overcomes by the end of the film. This film has a many intense/frightening scenes, with the surprising chase through the flooding streets, characters coming to terms that if they want to be happy then one of them has to die and a long section where Hodaka is searching for the disappeared Hina where he breaks out of police custody, rides a motorcycle while avoiding police vehicles, then encounters his mentor whom attacks him and he pulls a gun on, police come in threatening to kill Hodaka when all his friends come in and stop the people trying to capture him so that he can see Hina for one last time, among others. In Australia, Weathering with You has received the age rating of PG which is recommended for children over the age of 12, but I believe that for the usage of quiet intense violence, difficult themes, some profanity, mild drug use and intense scenes, it deserves the rating of M for mature. Do not be fooled and allow little kids to watch this film, it is a mature film that is not suitable for younger people.
Overall, Weathering with You is, in my opinion, another masterpiece from the visionary Makoto Shinkai. Realised, flawed characters written expertly, stunning art design and direction, surprisingly dark and intense themes and scenes, emotional moments, gripping action and a satisfying and beautiful ending. This film is easily the best movie that has come out this year by far, and I say that this movie is perfect.

GKIDS Published Jan. 16, 2020 Updated Jan. 21, 2020 Weathering with You Directed by Makoto Shinkai Animation, Drama, Fantasy, Romance PG-13 1h 54m The rain doesn’t simply fall in “Weathering With You, ” an anime about love in a time of catastrophe, it gushes. The record torrent that pounds Tokyo throughout is relentless: It floods streets and homes, wrapping the city in a heavy blanket of gray. There’s beauty here, though, in the shocks of color like the red latticework of an Eiffel-like tower and umbrellas that, when seen from above, look like promenading flowers. Every so often, a ray of sunshine pierces the gloom, illuminating a small urban patch. The first time you see the sun streaming, it’s in the company of the teenage Hina (voiced by Nana Mori), who rushes toward the beam as if pulled by a magnet. She finds its terminus on the roof of a derelict building, where the light spreads over bright green, nodding blooms and an incongruously placed red torii gate. A traditional structure found in or at the entrance of Shinto shrines, the gate often serves as an entrance to a sacred space. Putting her hands together as if in prayer, Hina closes her eyes and steps through the gate, changing both herself and the story. She doesn’t travel over the rainbow, not exactly, but slips through a watery portal, landing on a green field atop a mushroom-shaped cloud. The apocalyptic resonance of this image, which invokes the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, hovers like an omen. For now, though, Hina finds peace under a blue sky where fish soar and raindrops fall up, swirling like tadpoles. She’s bathed in light, but then also soon home, waking from a voyage or maybe a dream. The Japanese writer-director Makoto Shinkai has a thing for dualities and a penchant for imaginatively blurring the divide between them. Much like his wistful hit “Your Name, ” this movie centers on an adolescent boy and girl whose lives intersect, almost magically, and who mirror each other visually and narratively. In “Weathering, ” the boy, Hodaka (Kotaro Daigo), is a teenage runaway who almost drowns soon after the movie opens. Once in Tokyo, he struggles to stay dry, find something to eat, a place to live, a way to live. The story grows more intricate after Hodaka meets Hina, a sweet, friendly smiler with a younger brother and no adult support. The two soon hit on a scheme to sell Hina’s mysterious new gifts as a so-called sunshine girl, a figure who can summon the sun with prayer. In Shinto, the sun goddess Amaterasu is an important deity, but Hina’s realm is far more down to earth. Creating a website, she and Hodaka start selling her rays at a bargain rate, sharing precious light with the city’s grateful, sodden inhabitants. Shinkai fills “Weathering” with bold leaps, narrative complications (the story jumps around in time, not always productively) and softly hued, filigreed backdrops that approach the photorealistic. The character design, by contrast, is more generic, conforming to the familiar stylized anime (and manga) look. Hina and Hodaka have heart-shaped faces with huge gemstone eyes, small noses and tiny, ductile mouths that open wide and comically wider. The characters’ personalities are filled in by the highly modulated vocal performances and by Shinkai’s animation, the discreet and bold choices that make their faces and physicalities pop. The story flows like all the running water, particularly in its fast-moving first hour. As Shinkai briskly cuts from one image to another, introducing characters as he jumps from scene to scene, the story gathers momentum that escalates with a fired gun, a sleazy villain and a rush to safety. The pace is sometimes so rapid that you scarcely have time to look, much less admire the translucent sheen of a plastic garbage bag or the meticulous lettering on a beer can (“Since 1978”). That’s to Shinkai’s purpose. As streets, homes, rooms and faces hurtle by, a textured world emerges detail by detail, one that looks like life yet is also expressionistic. “Weathering With You” loses its way with a diffuse ending that leans heavily on pop songs and includes a fatalistic shrug and a romantic deluge of tears. A late nod at climate change — a close-up reference to the Anthropocene — brings the story briefly into the bleak now. This invocation of environmental catastrophe puts all the rain into new, unmistakable context. It also suggests that a lot of what happened earlier in the story may have been dreamed into existence by two impressionable young souls who, struggling to survive, found refuge in each other and wished the real world away. Whether they did or not, you know how they feel. Weathering With You Rated PG-13 for intimations of doom. In Japanese, with English subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 54 minutes.

In the new anime movie Weathering With You, a teenager named Hina treks up 10 flights to a rooftop where a makeshift shrine sits in a rare beam of sunlight. Tokyo is rain-soaked, and as it continues to pour, she walks toward the shrine and, praying hard, steps through the shrine gate. The rain halts mid-air. The movie cuts to Hina falling through the sky like some celestial thing, witnessing supernatural weather patterns only she’s meant to see. Hina has the power to stop the rain. She’s a “sunshine girl, ” a mythic master of weather. Later, alongside an enterprising young man named Hodaka, she channels her abilities into a business, stopping the eternal rain and summoning the sun for customers’ weddings, festivals, or fireworks shows. It’s a godsend, in a way; Hina is responsible for supporting her younger brother without the help of her parents. “I’ve finally found my role in life, ” she tells Hodaka as they watch fireworks from a dry spot of concrete. Weathering With You, released this month by the creators of hit anime Your Name, is plainly about the imminent climate catastrophe, the creeping awareness that in a decade or so the earth’s increasing temperatures could bring with them rising seas, wildfires, extreme weather. The added water vapor caused by global warming, climate scientists have warned for decades, will coalesce as heavy rain not unlike the constant downpour in Weathering. Scientists describe this as an inevitability, which makes writer-director Makoto Shinkai’s movie, ultimately, a power fantasy—a fever dream that one person can forestall environmental crisis. (Spoiler Alert: Plot points for Weathering With You follow. ) The sexy pitch for Weathering With You is “climate catastrophe romance. ” Hodaka and Hina are both scrappy teenagers without support networks who reap success from their sunshine-bringing work partnership, which soon takes on a will-they-or-won’t-they tension. After an ecstatic night of luxury in a Tokyo hotel room—during which it seems like they might finally kiss—Hina reveals that, traditionally, the sunshine girl “gets sacrificed and disappears. Then the weather goes back to normal. ” Disrobing, Hina exposes a shoulder with the texture of water. All of her sunshine prayer, she admits, has caused this. Then she’s gone and, predictably, it stops raining. Critics are hailing Weathering With You as the perfect movie for 2020, a saccharine, candy pop love story that’s also an allegory for environmental collapse. The pundits are right here, but not just for that reason. The larger subterranean premise of Weathering With You is that the choices two human children make can influence the climate at large—that a young maiden’s prayer and love and empathy can impact its inevitable unraveling. After Hina disappears from that Tokyo hotel room, the temperature jumps to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The force of an individual has, in this perhaps irresponsible science-fiction reality, swept away destructive and unnatural weather patterns. You can convince your brother to renounce beef, your mother to compost, your sister to take canvas bags to Whole Foods. You can give $50 in your father-in-law’s name to the Natural Resources Defense Council and donate your car to charity. If you’re in an urban environment, it’s likely that someone’s tried to convince you to do one—or all—of these things. Now more than ever, the burden seems to have fallen on individuals to decrease our global carbon footprint. Nobody sane would argue this is unproductive. If anything, individual awareness and advocacy will be what leads governments and corporations to take the necessary action against environmental disaster. It’s just that the one person, or 3 million people, who step up to take responsibility for the earth can’t turn into mythic maidens and stop the unceasing rain. “The bigger issue is that focusing on individual choices around air travel and beef consumption heightens the risk of losing sight of the gorilla in the room: civilization’s reliance on fossil fuels for energy and transport overall, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of global carbon emissions, ” Penn State University professor Michael Mann wrote recently in Time. “We need systemic changes that will reduce everyone’s carbon footprint, whether or not they care. ” One 2017 report claims that 100 companies are responsible for 70 percent of the emissions produced since 1988. Out of the top 20 companies that have contributed most to climate change, 12 are state-owned. It is impossible to fathom a teenage girl sponging up any significant volume of spilled oil or capturing any carbon, although certainly there are hundreds of thousands who would try. Internationally, more than 4 million people—most notably school children—attended the September 2019 climate strikes. Toward the end of Weathering With You, Hodaka reverses Hina’s sacrifice when, as one critic put it, he brings Hina back and “ doomed Tokyo because of hormones ” by retriggering the rainfall. The city is subsumed by flood, with homes and businesses bricked by feet of water. Checking the defunct Sunshine Girl inbox, Hodaka is drawn to the home of an old woman who, years ago, emailed in an attempt to engage Hina’s services. The high is 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Hodaka enters her apartment and she comments that she moved from her old home downtown. He learns it is now underwater. “I’m sorry, ” he says. The old woman does not accept his apology. She opens a plastic wrapper containing a snack. Two hundred years ago, she explains, Tokyo was a bay, and little by little, “human beings and weather changed it. ” “I think it’s just gone back to its original self, ” she says. Weathering With You is a fantasy, but it’s not escapist. It’s a modern masterpiece for reasons its creators may not have anticipated. In 13 or 50 years, when the impact of climate change will be more manifest, future generations might look back at it as a quaint time capsule, a reminder of a moment when one individual might find it appropriate to apologize for bringing the flood.
